The Algorithm is You

We spend a lot of time worrying about algorithms. Are they biased? Are they manipulating us? Will artificial intelligence replace our jobs, our creativity, our humanity? These are valid concerns. I've written about cognitive bias in technology before, and I stand by every word.

The Algorithm is You

But here's what I've come to realize since then: the algorithm I should be most concerned about is the one running inside my own head.

You Are Running on Autopilot

Think about your morning. You woke up, reached for your phone, checked the same apps in the same order, had the same emotional reaction to whatever was on the screen, and started your day from whatever state that left you in. You didn't choose any of that. It just happened.

That's an algorithm. An if-then loop running without oversight. If notification, then check. If bad news, then anxiety. If anxiety, then distraction. If distraction, then guilt. Repeat.

We talk about cognitive bias like it's something that lives in code and datasets. And it does. But it lives in us first. Every algorithm ever written was authored by a human running their own unchecked patterns. The bias didn't start in the software. It started in the programmer's nervous system.

The Difference Between Humans and Machines

Here's the thing that separates us from the technology we build: we can change. A machine learning model will continue to operate on the data it was trained on until someone actively intervenes. It cannot wake up one morning and decide to see the world differently. It cannot have a moment of clarity in the shower. It cannot sit across from another human being and realize that everything it believed was wrong.

We can. But we usually don't.

Not because we're incapable. Because it's uncomfortable. Updating your own operating system means admitting that the current version has bugs. And most of us would rather live with the bugs than face what it takes to patch them.

Fight or Flight Was Never Meant for Email

Our cognitive biases evolved to keep us alive. Daniel Kahneman's research on System 1 and System 2 thinking showed us that our brains developed shortcuts to make rapid decisions in survival situations. See a shadow that looks like a predator? React first, think later. That's a feature, not a bug.

But we're not running from predators anymore. We're sitting in open-plan offices reacting to Slack messages with the same neurological urgency our ancestors used to dodge bears. The algorithm is firing, but the context has completely changed. And nobody updated the code.

So we snap at a colleague because their message "felt" aggressive. We avoid a difficult conversation because our brain flagged it as a threat. We make a hiring decision based on pattern recognition that has nothing to do with the candidate's ability and everything to do with our comfort level.

Cross-Checking Your Own Bias

In my work with technology teams, I've always advocated for cross-checking bias in the products we build. But I've learned, painfully, that you can't cross-check a system you refuse to examine.

I spent most of my life running on default settings. Reacting instead of responding. Letting fear dictate decisions that looked rational on the surface but were really just self-preservation dressed up as strategy. It took getting to a point where my defaults nearly destroyed everything for me to finally look under the hood.

What I found wasn't pretty. But it was honest. And honesty is the first patch you install when you're ready to update.

Three Questions Worth Asking Yourself

You don't need a therapist to start this process. You need three questions and the willingness to sit with the answers:

  • What am I reacting to right now, and is the threat real? Most of the time, it isn't. The email isn't an attack. The feedback isn't a referendum on your worth. Your brain is pattern-matching against old data.
  • When was the last time I changed my mind about something that mattered? If you can't remember, your algorithm hasn't been updated in a while. That should concern you more than any AI model.
  • Am I making this decision from clarity or from comfort? Comfort feels like wisdom. It isn't. Comfort is just your existing patterns telling you to stay where you are.

The Real Update

I'm not anti-technology. I've spent my career in it. I believe in what we're building and the potential it holds. But I also believe that the quality of what we build is directly proportional to the quality of the humans building it.

If we're running on autopilot, stressed and reactive and operating from biases we've never examined, we're going to keep building systems that reflect those patterns. At scale. And then we'll point at the algorithm and say it's the problem.

It's not. We are. And unlike the machines, we have the ability to do something about it.

The most important algorithm you'll ever debug is the one between your ears. Start there. Everything else gets better when you do.
